For over 4 decades, I've thought about all the violent names on M*A*S*H. It's very obvious, but I never see anyone talking about it.
Hawkeye PIERCE (all these definitions fit, frankly)
Tumblr media
Also HAWK, a bird of prey (also fits 'taking prey by surprise with a short chase' as he's such a whore flirt) who has an extreme personality And is occasionally prone to violence because he’s so angry that there’s not peace.
Tumblr media
BJ HunniCUTt
Tumblr media
John TRAPper McIntire
Tumblr media
Charles WINCHESTER (a type of gun)
Tumblr media
Frank BURNS
Tumblr media
Max KLINGEr (root of the Germanic surname is Klinge, meaning "Metal blade or sword"
Tumblr media
Father John Francis MULCAHY - in Gaelic means "Warlike"
Tumblr media
Walter RADAR O'Reilly - a radio waves system usually used to detect weapons
Tumblr media
I kind of love that on a show about war and violence, there are quite a few names that are violent in general, or have violent connotations.

“Henry Blake was incompetent” Henry Blake was human and a great surgeon. He loved his kids, his wife, fishing, he loved Hawkeye, Trapper, Klinger, Radar, Mulcahey, he loved being a doctor. Just because he wasn’t walking military propaganda like Col. Potter doesn’t mean he was incompetent. Henry trusted everyone to make the good moral decision. They always did, and I happen to think he was a good, fair leader.

My favorite thing about Trapper John Mcintyre has to be Wayne Roger's pure leading man chemistry. Like in-universe, Trapper is painted as the cool, sexy, smart doctor soldier to Pierce's witty, nerdy, neurotic anti-war draftee.
Anytime he's not on screen, you can just imagine him living his best life. He's somewhere at the 4077, flirting with a nurse or writing his wife and kids, or drinking with Henry. From a character development standpoint, he's allowed to be just as nuanced and interesting as Hawkeye. Plus they film him as though he's the lead - big in the lens, lots of close-ups to show off his sparkling eyes. They made him a competent surgeon who saves lives, give him so many funny lines, and so many 'acceptable' flaws- he's a philanderer but it's framed as a wartime issue, he clearly loves his family but was just doing 'what guys do'. He drinks too much but who wouldn't, given the circumstances.
The more I watch (and rewatch) the first few seasons the more I see how Wayne Rogers left when they tried to make him more of a sidekick. Trap is definitely not a sidekick. I ADORE BJ but they almost learned their lesson with Trap and never gave him too much personality to overshadow our actual protagonist.
If this show wasn't about Hawkeye, it would have no choice but to be about Trapper. I think that makes me love Hawk more because he's not the sexiest, most charismatic, or the most charming guy in the camp. He's the smartest (until Winchester shows up), but in reality, BF Pierce is a chatty gangly nerd, prone to bouts of depression, who's brain to mouth filter only works selectively, and he's stuck in an impossible situation that he doesn't want to be in and making the best of it. You have to love him for it.

Writing challenge I challenge every writer out there to do: Either let your music shuffle or compile a list of songs and press shuffle. When the song comes on, you have the length of the song to come up with a story idea.
I did it last night when i was itching to write something and this is what i came up with
Better off Dead by Sleeping With Sirens:
The war did a number on Hawkeye. Flashbacks whenever a car backfired. Whenever an airplane flew overhead. And children. He drank to cope during the war, so why couldn’t he do it now? So that’s what he does,it works for a little while, but you can’t drink when you're sleeping.
Sleep by My Chemical Romance:
Hawkeye was never good at sleeping. As a child he was a restless sleeper and would always end up in his dad’s bed. This went on way longer than it should have (he was 12 when his dad finally put a stop to it, claiming he was milking his mother’s death for longer than he should). In Korea he wouldn’t sleep for days because he thought it was the only way he could not see all the blood and guts he saw in the daytime seep into his dreams(nightmares and night terrors were best friends with Hawkeye’s subconscious)
Carry On by Fun:
After his stint in the loony bin, Hawkeye thought he was destined to end up there permanently after the war. However Hawkeye had friends like BJ and Trapper who wouldn’t let that happen. When Trapper found out that the war had affected him the way it did, the minute the war ended he came running to Crabapple Cove. BJ had the same idea and the three of them were determined to make it through peacetime together and make sure everyone stayed sane.
Marchin On by One Republic:
Trapper knew the war was affecting Hawkeye (hell you were blind if you couldn’t see how the war was affecting the chief surgeon) Trapper leaves a note for his replacement (somehow that felt more important than drafting a goodbye note to Hawk). BJ finds this letter under his army issued pillow after the welcoming festivities of stealing a generals jeep, dodging sniper fire, getting on the job in the field training, and showing up to your CO drunk as a skunk. He reads it and learns that Hawkeye is the best friend anyone can ever ask for but he is not all there and the job of being his best friend is to make sure he stays sane enough to get out of the war scratch free. Flash forward to Hawkeye’s stint in the loony bin. When BJ goes to visit he can’t help but remember the letter and feel as if he betrayed Hawkeye somehow by not keeping him sane, thus he can’t say goodbye because he needs to fix it.
Recovery by James McAruther:
After the war, Hawkeye is forced into AA and therapy by his father. He won’t let him work at the practice or anywhere for that matter until he has his brain cleaned of the cobwebs. He doesn’t take this ultimatum well in the beginning and lashes out at the caregivers and his psychiatrist. Until one day he gets a letter from Louise Mcintire saying her husband John died from liver failure and that she hoped he was doing better than her husband was because she knew from his letters from Korea that they owned a Still and both partook in the activity. That is when Hawkeye decides to change.
Better Days by Goo Goo Dolls:
Christmas time at 4077. BJ is finishing up being Santa Claus and before he can jump down off his chair, Hawkeye jumps in his lap and Beej plays along. “What do you want for Christmas little boy?” Hawkeye says in a dead serious tone of voice, no hint of sarcasm at all, “I want there to be no war when we wake up. I want the locals to not be impoverished and have to resort to odd jobs and have to move around because their villages are being shelled. I wish that everyone could just be home under our Christmas trees back home for our families to unwrap” Beej starts to cry and says he knows just the feeling.
Disenchanted by My Chemical Romance:
Growing up Hawkeye Pierce didn’t have the most conventional childhood. He lost both his sister and mother at a very young age. He didn’t know what killed them but knew he wanted to be around to stop the sadness. His father felt proud. However this made him a target of bullying from not just strangers but his own distant family. Aunt May would call him stupid for wishing to figure out what killed her sister, “why can’t you just put it to rest Ben” she’d say. Billy felt like the idiot cousin - more interested in drugs, sex, and rock and roll and tormented Hawkeye everyday. Even once pushing him in the lake to try and get rid of him. But then realizing if he died it would be more heartache for the Pierce family and he would be at fault.
